Mr Darnell, who set up his Swansea-based business in 2003, said: “At the age of 43 I was out of work and left with no idea as to what I could do. I’d worked in a factory processing plant for 15 years and became redundant when they were forced to close. I was too young to be out of work, I had never been unemployed and had no knowledge of how to work for myself, and I felt isolated.”

He decided that franchising offered the best opportunity and after visiting a franchise exhibition and searching the internet he discovered Oscar.

“I was attracted to the family business orientation, low-cost start up fee, low running costs, five-year contract, and plenty of support,” he said.

“I live in an area with a strong population of pets, which brings me good and repeat business. This is a business that offers you flexibility, and after all this time I still enjoy my work, and I plan to continue building my business, and enjoying the social side and the friendliness of my customers.
