WOMEN STEP UP GAME

WOMEN are making their presence increasingly felt in the franchising industry as they realise the scope of opportunities that it has to offer.


According to the latest annual bfa/NatWest franchise survey, 28 per cent of franchisees are currently women running a franchise business alone or with a spouse or partner. In 2003, the figure was 24 per cent.



Thirty nine per cent of all new franchisees over the last two years have been women, compared with 21 per cent in 2003.



Tom Endean, marketing manager for the bfa, said: “As franchising has developed over the years, and more businesses have chosen the franchise model as a route to expansion, many new opportunities have been created for individuals to start up and run their own businesses under the brand and support of a franchise brand.



“A significant trend within this industry growth has been the steady increase in the number of women coming into franchising, with more and more of their success stories inspiring others,” he said.



The impact of recession on the employment market over the last two or three years has fuelled interest in self employment options, especially for women who chose to take time out from their careers to start families. Many of those planning to return to work are facing a tough jobs market, and having to consider other options, including starting their own business. 



With a growing range of business sectors represented by franchising, there are more investment opportunities likely to appeal to women, including those in health and fitness, personal services and child care.



However, the comprehensive practical training that is offered by franchisors as part of the investment package has created equal opportunities for women in some of the traditionally male dominated industries, such as automotive repairs.



Mr Endean added: “For women who want to run their own business, franchising can offer a solution, and has already enabled thousands of business owners to work for themselves, but not by themselves.”
