AFTER selling his business in 2005, qualified building defects surveyor Martyn Surridge planned to expand his buy-to-let portfolio and live off the proceeds.
However, he found that boredom soon set in, followed by the credit crunch, and he realised that his plans would have had to change. Last year he launched his own Aspray franchise in Harlow, east Hertfordshire.
Aspray specialises in project managing building insurance claims and general commercial and domestic building works. The company has over 60 franchisees currently operating throughout its national network, which it plans to expand by 25 per cent over the next 12 months.
Mr Surridge, 53, had set up businesses before, but given the economic climate he decided to look at the ‘tried and tested’ franchise business model.
He said: “With my interest in property, Aspray naturally appealed, and I was impressed by the company and its commitment to making the business work with like-minded people.”
Seven months on, Mr Surridge credits the success of his new business to the training and support plus a number of excellent leads provided by head office.
He added: “You must have good communication skills and be prepared to work hard, but the main thing I’ve learned is that my wife isn’t the only one who can multi-task.”
