Americans are renowned for thinking big and Fred DeLuca is no exception. He is the president of the Subway chain of franchised sandwich restaurants and plans to open more than 2,000 stores across the UK by 2011. He founded Subway Sandwiches & Salads in Connecticut in 1965. Now the company has more than 1,600 restaurant in 75 countries. “The UK is an important market for us,” says De Luca. “Our goal in every market we operate in is to match the number of stores of the largest fast-food chain.” There are more than 70 Subway restaurants in the UK and Ireland and the company is seeking new franchisees. All Subway’s restaurants are individually owned and operated by local businessmen and women.
