“Becoming an area developer gives me the chance to provide backing in a number of ways, such as providing central plant distribution and some administrative services,” he says. “This will enable new franchisees to focus on selling and grow their businesses at a faster rate.

“Managing and organising businesses is one of my key skills and something I really enjoy. I can now also recruit a dedicated sales person to continue to grow my own franchise area, allowing me to focus on area development and to continue to satisfy the needs of existing customers.”

Gouldney, once the general manager of a multi-million pound brewery business, was offered alternative jobs within the company when the brewery closed but chose to become owner-operator with Urban Planters.

He supplies and maintains interior plants for clients including the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, South-west government officers and car dealership Riders Jaguar.

Urban Planters says its franchise continues to attract a lot of interest among potential recruits. Five go-getters have joined recently and others are going through the selection process. More are wanted. There are also opportunities to buy ready-made businesses.

Potential franchisees must invest £35,000 and have bank support for working capital. Plant knowledge is not vital as training is provided.
